Xin Nian

Xin Nian (this means new year in Chinese)
(Nian is a monster that comes out only in Chinese New year, and is scared of fireworks)

Like the ancient Nian,
wandering through twilights’ gloom,
We return under the cover of shadow,
Chased by the fireworks’ bloom.

Hearts in darkness as the old memories wane,
Deep in sorrow along with pain.
Grandparents linger in their quiet, worn room,
Sat alone on the couch,
Memories sinked in foam.

Red lanterns hanging against the dusky sky,
Brightening the path where the promises lie.
Childrens and Parents reunite,
Under each fire spark dancing across the night,
Temporarily,
Chasing away grief with its vibrant light.

After the day celebrated with eternal cheer,
It is the end of the New Year.

Like the ancient Nian,
We are driven away by the fireworks,
Until the next Xin Nian.
